19.30 @ Avenue House

In 1875 the Alexandra Palace Theatre opened as part of the rebuilt Alexandra Palace, following the 1873 opening and destruction by fire of the original Palace. The Theatre went dark in 1934 and then, over many decades, became lost to history. That was until an impressive regeneration of the east part of the Palace brought the Theatre back to life in 2018; and despite the pandemic which followed, the Theatre is once again thriving. Friends of the Alexandra Palace Theatre was created in 2002 by the Alexandra Park and Palace Charitable Trust and in 2020 became an independent organisation. In 2012 the Friends embarked on a research project to deepen understanding of the Theatre. They found a history specific to the Alexandra Palace Theatre that also reflects many aspects of society during its 150 years; the theme of the talk by Nigel Willmott and Patricia Brearey.

Nigel is a writer and journalist and chair of Friends of the Alexandra Palace Theatre. He is a former chair of the Board of Trustees of Alexandra Palace and currently sits on the Board via the Palace’s committee structure. Patricia was a primary school class teacher and music coordinator who currently enjoys research. She is secretary of Friends of the Alexandra Palace Theatre and is also an Alexandra Palace volunteer.

The meeting will take place in Avenue House, located at Stephens House and Gardens, 17 East End Road, Finchley N3 3QE. It will begin at 7.30 pm
