Aspects of Old Friern
Dr Pauline Ashbridge
2.30 p.m. Thursday
25 February 2016

Pauline Ashbridge is a former journalist, teacher and college lecturer, who has lived in Finchley for the past 24 years. Her doctorate from the University of London concerned Poor Law tax legislation in 19th Century metropolitan London.

Dr Ashbridge talked first about a few of the unusual and intriguing elements she discovered when researching “The Fields of Friern”, her 2012 publicaiton that covered local history from the 15th to the 19th century. She then moved on to her recent history of “The Old Freehold Houses of Friern”, which describes a previously unrecognised old local “freehold road” – focusing particularly on its historical significance, its people, and the records in London that enabled the pasts of these old houses to be uncovered.

You can listen to an excerpt of Pauline’s talk here.

The meeting took place at Stephens House, 17 East End Road N3 3QE.
