Much has been written about the First World War but little has been told about what was happening on the Home Front – conscription, rationing, Zeppelin raids, propaganda and industrial unrest. David Berguer described life in Barnet during the war when he delivered the twentieth Jean Scott Memorial Lecture on Thursday, 26 November.

David Berguer is Chairman of the Friern Barnet & District Local History Society, and has written three books on the local area. ‘All Over by Christmas’, his latest book, charts the progress of the War in Britain as a whole, in London and in particular the area of north London covering Barnet, Finchley, Friern Barnet, New Southgate and Whetstone.
