Survey of Local Heritage

Barnet, in common with many local authorities, has a Schedule of Buildings of Local Architectural or Historic Interest – buildings that, while not benefitting from the statutory protection provided by the national list, are given particular status in Barnet’s Local Plan and in dealing with planning applications.

The Council has just initiated a review of this list, and is inviting community engagement in a borough-wide survey of local heritage. Volunteers will survey existing list entries and identify potential new entries.

There will be free training events for volunteers, as well as support for volunteers from the dedicated project team which the Council has set up with Urban Vision.

Two training events have already taken place :

  • Thursday 6th July, from 2 to 3.30 pm in the Salon at Avenue House
  • Friday 7th July from 10.30 am to 12 noon in Christ Church Barnet (St Albans Road EN5 4LA)

A third training session in August has been added:

  • Tuesday 8th August, from 14:00-15:30 in Committee Room 3 at Hendon Town Hall, The Burroughs, Hendon, London, NW4 4BG

Book your place by emailing Hannah Barter at Hannah.barter@uvns.org or call her on 01538 386221. Please mention the Finchley Society when you book your place, and please email Peter Pickering at pe.pickering@virgin.net and let him know what you are doing.

This is a real opportunity for the Society, and we hope many members will take part.
